Mexicans Abroad: Another One for Lozano, Assists From Guardado and A Goal for ‘Tecatito’

Welcome to our weekly highlight of all things ‘Extranjeros.’

It was another week in the leagues abroad and here are the key points you might’ve missed from this weekend from our favorite Aztecs:

‘Chucky’ Is On Fire

Hirving ‘Chucky’ Lozano simply cannot be stopped right now. During PSV’s match against Roda on Sunday the Mexican striker once again was able to get a goal for the Dutch club. PSV would go on to win the match 2-0, securing another three points for the club and for Lozano, adding layer of respect from those in the Eredivisie as well as on the international. He is currently one of the 23 men called up to take part in the World Cup qualifier against Panama on September 1st and a goal should all but be expected.

Guardado With the Assists

After an own goal given away early in the 10th minute that gave Celta Vigo the lead against Real Betis, Andres Guardado was able to help his team by being involved with both goals in the 2-1 victory. Hailed as one of the three captains on the team, the leadership from Guardado continued into this match, with the midfielder providing assists in the 31st and 77th minute. Guardado was named to La Liga’s Ideal XI for Jornada 2 and was recently called up for the qualifier against Panama. The confidence is growing for the Mexican and in one of the biggest clubs in Europe, this is a very positive step for one of the El Tri’s top players.

‘Tecatito’ Scores

Porto FC took on Sporting Braga on Sunday morning and once again it would be Jesus ‘Tecatito’ Corona who would not only be the only Mexican to start the match but would also score the winning goal in the 7th minute of play. The goal was brilliantly executed by Corona, who chipped the ball over Braga’s defender before perfectly placing it in the back of the net.

After being on hiatus during the Confederations Cup over the summer for personal reasons, ‘Tecatito’ did speak publicly earlier in July stating he was ready to play for both club and country. ‘Tecatito’ was amongst a number of Europeos who has been called up for the qualifier on September 1st. His performance and playing with Porto seems to be going well and after missing out on a big tournament this summer, hopefully that same level of performance translates to the international stage.

No Victories for ‘Chicharito’

Despite finally scoring in the EPL with West Ham on August 20th, Javier ‘Chicharito’ Hernandez’s time at West Ham has been coupled with losses. On Saturday, the squad took on NewCastle United, with ‘Chicharito’ being given the start and the full 90 minutes. NewCastle would be victorious in the 3-0 defeat and ‘Chicharito’ is now three losses in three matches with the club. His form and dedication on the field has been noticed and the fast-paced competition the EPL has to offer should be able to translate to the national team. He too has been called up for the qualifiers starting on September 1st.

Lalo Herrera Scores

Rangers FC took on Ross County on Sunday in the Scottish Premiership and both Lalo Herrera and Carlos ‘Guilit’ Pena were subbed into the match towards the middle of the second half. Lalo Herrera would be the one to stand out of the two, getting a goal in the 89th minute off a pass from Wallace inside the box. This marks Lalo Herrera’s first goal in the league and should give him necessary confidence as he joins El Tri later on this week.

Dos Santos Bros

It has been about one month since Mexican midfielder Jonathan Dos Santos joined brother Giovani Dos Santos as the newest player of the Los Angeles Galaxy. Despite high hopes from the two Mexican players to help improve the team’s current performance, the bottom of the table for LA Galaxy seems to be far too much for them to fix. During Sunday’s Cali Clasico match against the San Jose Earthquakes–the first match the brothers play alongside each other for the club–the overall lack of chemistry between the team overshadowed any effort Jona made to create plays throughout the field. Gio Dos Santos had just returned following a hamstring injury and he took some time to get back into rhythm.

Galaxy would fall to the Earthquakes 3-0 and are currently in 10th place in the MLS Western Conference. Both Gio and Jona have been called up with El Tri for the qualifiers. How they performance on the international level will be something to keep an eye on.

Not Featured: Eintracht Frankfurt (Carlos Salcedo, Marco Fabian*) 0-1 Wolfsburg; AS Roma (Hector Moreno) 0-3 Intermilan; Rio Ave 1-1 Benfica (Raul Jimenez); Feirense (Antonio Briseno) 0-2 Rio Ave; Standard Liege (Guillermo Ochoa) 0-4  Club Brugge
