Liga MX Femenil #GritaMexicoA21: Three Things – Week 7

We’re skipping the usual fluff introduction I put in to up my character count and getting straight into it.

The officiating has been bad. Even though I wasn’t able to do a recap last week, that didn’t stop me from witnessing the unfortunate scuffle that took place during the Puebla-Necaxa match in Week 6. A lot of kicking and pulling but ultimately a lack of proper management from all the referees (even the CMs for both teams pointed that out on their accounts).

This week it seems as though the incompetency continued and once again, it was towards the end of the match. Rather than simply blowing the whistle and eliminating the tension altogether, those in charge of the San Luis-Xolos Femenil match irresponsibly avoided becoming part of the action. Almost immediately after the players began to shove and push, the center referee can be seen backing away and just blowing his whistle. Now, as a male, I imagine there are some cautious steps he felt needed to take when it came to potentially grabbing or moving a women athlete but even then, one has to question what procedures or protocols the league has implemented for the multi-gendered officiating staff when situations like this take place. Because this will keep happening; friction will continue to grow especially as the season starts winding down. The intensity in the league is promising but fights cannot and should not happen on a weekly basis.

Santos is having a very good run. I didn’t take the chance to highlight this squad during my last recap, choosing instead to focus on Puebla, but make no mistake: the performance level from Santos after seven weeks has been very impressive. Four matches won and only one loss with 18 goals in their favor. Veteran Cinthya Peraza currently sits in fourth place in the golden boot race with six goals while youngsters Alexia Villanueva and Alexxandra Ramírez Flores have a total of seven goals between the two of them, creating a good round of options for Santos moving forward. Their last two matches have been commanding victories, with a combined total of ten goals within the last 180 minutes and as they prepare to take on equally impressive Puebla, the momentum is in their favor as they get ready for a tougher second stretch of the season.

Xolos might very well return to the promised land. I left them out of my Liguilla predictions table recently and it looks like I might have to be happily proven wrong. Sitting in sixth place in the standings just behind Santos, Xolos has kept Pachuca at bay and throughout the past seven weeks, has only allowed one goal in matches where they did concede, including second place Chivas during their Week 6 encounter. Similar to Santos, tougher matches lie ahead but under Fabiola Vargas, if they can beat Leon swiftly next week, they’ll be confident going up against the two Regio power houses just two weeks later.
