Liga MX Femenil #GritaMexicoA21: Three Things – Week 5

This week’s three things will focus on the dark horses of the tournament five weeks in. Those teams that have always had potential and are looking to capitalize on it (or forgetting that they once had it). Let’s take a look at the highlights from Jornada 5.

Renae Cuellar is (and continues to be) very good. In another world or under circumstances, Cuellar would have the coveted silverware that matches the immense talent she possesses but even without that, there’s no denying the place she holds in Liga MX Femenil and Xolos Femenil history and what she means to the future of both. With four goals in five games, Cuellar isn’t just the Xolos offense, her goalscoring shows why she is an immense asset to the national team. She doesn’t just score the goals; she capitalizes on those chances as much as she can. Xolos is currently in sixth place and the bottom of the table will be entertaining to watch as the season goes on but something seems to be clicking for the Tijuana-based club under Fabiola Vargas and if Renae Cuellar keeps her momentum up, she might single-handedly lead the team back to the Liguilla.

Puebla has been a joy to watch. Another team that is also making a rare but refreshing appearance at the top of the table, Puebla Femenil concludes five weeks with three wins, two losses and eight goals in favor. Siena Ruelas is really finding her footing in the goalkeeper position Veronica Martins has proven to be a very useful offensive signing alongside fellow newcomers Pilar Aceves, Estefany Hernandez and Jessica Tenorio. Tougher teams have challenged them early in the season but if this trend continues, Puebla will find themselves in a good place moving forward.
What is going on with Mazatlan? All the fight Mazatlan had formulated and identified with in the first season has seemed to completely disappear this time around. Not a single goal has been scored by the Sinaloan side who have accumulated fourteen goals against in the first five weeks. It’s an unfortunate situation for a team that had found some level of personality to lose it suddenly, especially against teams that they went toe to toe with all last season like Santos, Puebla or León Femenil. If things don’t change soon, pressure will begin to build for Miguel Hernandez.
