Mexicans Abroad: Aztecs in Europa League shine as Jiménez, Tecatito, and Álvarez see Action

Welcome to our weekly highlight of all things ‘Extranjeros.’ It was another week in the leagues abroad. Here are the key points you might’ve missed from our favorite Aztecs:

Europa League

Everyone Saw Action

All three Aztecs saw action this week in the Europa League. The only player to see a victory was Raúl Jiménez, while Jesús “Tecatito” Corona and Edson Álvarez saw defeat.

Raúl Jiménez delivered an assist and played a productive 75 minutes in a dominant 3-0 win over Espanyol. Wolverhampton Wanderers had an impressive week as they outclassed and outperformed their challengers with RJ9 being an important part of their winning formula. In the 15th minute of play, Jiménez contributed a beautifully placed header for the assist and the early lead to his teammate, Diogo Jota. Jota added two more goals in the second half to complete his hat trick. RJ9 and his Wolves continued to cause havoc on Periquitos and closed the night with a 4-0 win on their first leg.

Jesús “Tecatito” Corona played the full 90 minutes in a competitive first leg against Bayer Leverkusen. The Dragons defense was put to the test early and often as Bayer took an early 1-0 lead in the 29th minute. Porto fell 2-0 in the second half after two penalty attempts by Leverkusen. Agustín Marchesín rejected the first attempt by Kai Havertz but Porto players anticipated the kick too soon and awarded Kai a second attempt. Despite Tecatito’s masterful ball movement and precise passing, the Dragons fell a goal short.

Finally, Edson Álvarez got the start for The Lancers and played a solid 67 minutes against Getafe. This is Edson’s third consecutive start for the Sons of the Gods this year. After a slow 2020 start, Álvarez is starting to reclaim minutes and his starting role. Unfortunately for Ajax, they could not climb from a 1-0 deficit, and El Geta managed to sneak in a second goal in stoppage time.
