Six weeks in and there’s plenty of dominant work being put forth by the top teams in the league. This week’s three things will highlight those efforts and what they mean in the current cycle.
Pachuca taking names. Three goals in Week 6 brought Pachuca’s total goal tally to 14 with only seven against and they currently sit in second in the standings. Charlyn Corral netted her eighth goal of the season — keeping her atop the golden boot race table — and helping Pachuca start their 3-1 victory over Juarez. Defeating the last place team is expected but the manner at which Pachuca has kept up their momentum so consistently in these first six weeks deserves acknowledgment. It’s likely they’ll cruise against Xolos in Week 7, creating a good level of confidence going into the next match against Tigres.
Rayadas taking names. Five goals in the first 45 minutes is as strong as it can get. Add in holding the first place position in the league standings despite having not played one match and it’s likely that Eva Espejo’s project, with a title already under its belt, is just getting started. The team currently has a +14 goal differential with no losses or draws. The next few weeks almost look like cruise control for Rayadas, working out the kinks within their system and really strengthening their arsenal to end the season against Tigres and Chivas strong but as we’ve seen in this league, we can’t get ahead of ourselves too early.
America makes a strong comeback. The last couple weeks of victories have been good for the America players and despite an early goal from Cruz Azul in the second half, they were able to recover and get the 3-1 victory. A questionable penalty kick would see Katty Martinez earn her 100th league goal (and her fifth goal of the season) to level it for America followed by two well-placed goals from Casandra Cuevas and Scarlet Camberos to grab the three points. The last couple of weeks have been about capitalizing on those open chances for America and if they can continue on that streak, they’ll be a force to reckon with heading into the Clasico Nacional.
