Mexicanas in College – February 2021 – Week 2

Alabama’s Reyna Reyes was called up for Mexico’s friendlies this weekend against Costa Rica, and the university did a nice interview with her about it. Oklahoma State’s Kim Rodriguez and TCU’s Emily Alvarado were also called up but were unable to go because of the weather situation in the mid-south region of the United States.

Southern Miss’ Ariel Diaz won Conference USA Offensive Player of the Week for her two goals against Nicholls State on February 3.

Ashlyn Fernandez will join sisters Kayla and Liliana at the University of Tulsa next year. Ashlyn was invited to the 2021 U17 World Cup with Mexico.

Alabama A&M had to reschedule their games because of the cold weather, moving a non-conference game against D-II Alabama-Huntsville to Wednesday, February 24 to accommodate a match against Mississippi College being rescheduled.

Arkansas–Pine Bluff (Alondra Lepe)’s match against Central Baptist was cancelled. No reason was given.

College of Charleston (Luciana Garcia Riefkohl) vs. Coastal Carolina has been postponed “due to COVID-19 protocols within the Coastal Carolina program” according to a press release. The match will be played on Thursday, March 4th.

Houston Baptist (Karla Ramirez) cancelled their match against Texas State due to the ongoing situation with the weather in Texas.

Lamar University (Paloma Martinezpostponed their match against Abilene Christian until Friday, March 5 and their match against University of The Incarnate Word until Sunday, March 7.

North Dakota (Olivia Valdivia)’s doubleheader against Oral Roberts was postponed due to inclement weather. No makeup dates have been announced.

North Texas’ (Kelsey Brann) match against Midwestern State was cancelled by MSU due to inclement weather, as was their match against SMU was “due to positive COVID-19 results and subsequent contact tracing within the Mustangs’ program” according to a press release.

San Francisco (Marissa Vasquez) has paused all team-related activities “due to positive COVID-19 test and related contact tracing, and out of an abundance of caution“, so their upcoming matches against Stanford and Gonzaga will hopefully be rescheduled for a later date.

Southern Methodist University (Celiana Torres)’s match against South Florida has been postponed until March 25th due to “to COVID-related issues with SMU.” SMU’s game against Houston “has been postponed indefinitely.

Southern Miss’ (Ariel Diaz) match against Grambling State was cancelled. No reason was given by either school.

Stephen F. Austin (Claudia Loredo) postponed their match against Nicholls State to March 5 and their match against Southeastern Louisiana to March 7th due to inclement weather.

University of Texas – El Paso (Bella Benavides)’s match against Angelo State was cancelled due to road conditions and inclement weather.

Texas – San Antonio (Britnney Campa)’s match against Houston has been postponed due to weather. No new makeup date was announced.

Wednesday, February 10th:

Carmen Acedo played all 90 minutes and registered a shot on goal but Chicago State lost to Valparaiso 2-1.

Marissa Vasquez had three shots and two shots on goal as the University of San Francisco beat Pacific 1-0. Pacific’s Melani Medina was not on the gameday roster for the Tigers.

Georgina Hernandez was not on the gameday roster as Texas – Rio Grande Valley drew Texas A&M – Corpus Christi 0-0

Thursday, February 11th:

Alondra Lepe played 51 minutes as Arkansas–Pine Bluff hammered Jarvis Christian 8-1. Lepe contributed an assist and had two shots and a shot on goal in the game.

Nayeli Diaz was not on the gameday roster as Saint Mary’s College lost to Sacramento State 2-1 in double overtime.

Bella Benavides was not on the gameday roster as University of Texas – El Paso downed New Mexico State 3-1.

Britnney Campa got 11 minutes as Texas – San Antonio lost 1-0 to Rice.

Alexia Delgado played 97 minutes and had a shot on goal as Arizona State beat Grand Canyon 3-2. Nicole Soto was not on the gameday roster.

Friday, February 12th:

Karla Ramirez played all 90 minutes as Houston Baptist lost 4-0 to University of The Incarnate Word.

Andrea Sanchez started and played 90 minutes in North Florida’s 3-1 win over Florida International University.

Sebelle Rojas played 24 minutes in Seattle’s 1-0 loss to Washington. Yaneisy Rodriguez was not on the gameday roster for the Huskies.

Claudia Loredo played 7 minutes in Stephen F. Austin’s 3-0 win over Central Arkansas.

Neither Maricarmen Reyes nor Isabel Loza were on the gameday roster as UCLA beat BYU 2-1.

Saturday, February 13th:

Mia Villegas was not on the gameday roster as Loyola Marymount drew California Baptist 1-1.

Melani Medina was not on the gameday roster as Pacific drew Sacramento State 1-1.

Bella Benavides was not on the gameday roster as University of Texas – El Paso drew Utah Valley 0-0.

Sunday, February 14th:

Alexia Delgado played 90 minutes and got two assists, three shots, and one shot on goal as Arizona State beat Grand Canyon 4-0. Nicole Soto was not on the gameday roster.

Marissa Vasquez started and got an assist in her 78 minutes as San Francisco beat Saint Mary’s College 2-1 in double overtime. Vasquez had three shots and a shot on goal in the effort. Nayeli Diaz was not on the gameday roster for the Gaels.

Georgina Hernandez made an appearance as Texas – Rio Grande Valley beat Texas – San Antonio 1-0. Brittney Campa was not on the gameday roster for UTSA.

Monday, February 15th:

Alexa Gonzalez did not make the gameday roster as USC downed BYU 4-3 in overtime.

Tuesday, February 16th:

Isabel Loza played six minutes off of the bench for UCLA in their 3-0 win against San Diego. Maricarmen Reyes was not on the gameday roster.
