At the CONCACAF 2022 FIFA World Cup qualification draw, El Tri and the 34 other CONCACAF national selections found out their opponents and the schedule in which they would play on their path to the 2020 FIFA World Cup.

While most of CONCACAF has to play through two additional rounds of round robin and knockout football, El Tri opens its World Cup qualification campaign in the tournament’s final phase on June 1, 2021 with a home match against Jamaica. Two away matches in the June 2021 window, including one against Costa Rica and one against either Curacao, Guatemala, Cuba, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, British Virgin Islands, Panama, Domincan Republic, Barbados, Dominica, or Anguilla. This final phase, nicknamed the Octagonal because of the eight teams playing each other in a round robin format, would determine,

While El Tri may not know whether they may have to deal with an experienced Canada side in addition to a talented, youth-dependent United States men’s national team, much of the schedule carries the same objectives as before. El Tri are obligated to be one of the three teams that qualify automatically from CONCACAF.  And in the two games against the rival Stars and Stripes,  El Tri carry that obligation even stronger despite their opponents’ recent strategic successes in Mexico.

As for those key games that could decide the top of the Octagonal, El Tri travels to the United States to potentially play in front of a friendly crowd in October 2020 while hosting the Stars and Stripes in the January 2021 window, when both teams have clarity to the stakes of their encounter in Mexico.
