MEXICO CITY. The Liga MX Presidency announced the suspension of Liga MX, Ascenso MX, and Liga MX Femenil in wake of the potential of the novel coronavirus spreading within Mexico.
The suspension of all football-related encounters for the three leagues is set to take place after the completion of Jornada 10 tonight in Clausura 2020, meaning the potential last game in the Liga MX tournament for a significant period of time could be the clasico joven between Club America and Cruz Azul.
The presidency also noted that the three leagues will retain communications with their players and team staff, and the suspension will continue until further notice. The decision comes with the leagues’ and teams’ support to comply with the Federal Ministry of Health’s guidance to prevent community spread of COVID-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus that may only have officially infected more than 148,000 people worldwide and killed 5,000 of those people but may already have overwhelmed hospital systems in Italy, the U.S., the UK, Iran, and others and forced multiple border closures throughout the world.
UPDATE: Liga Premier, the third division of the FMF pyramid, has also announced a suspension of all games after the matches on Sunday, March 15 are completed.
