Winning With Purpose Is Key For Mexico

After their much-needed victory over Jamaica, the Mexican Women’s National Team will seek to gain more points in their match against St. Kitts & Nevis on Saturday morning. El Tri Femenil go into this match with slightly higher expectations for a victory given the 11-0 thrashing Canada provided to the dual-island nation.

“The players are ready for the match,” stated head coach Christopher Cuellar. We have to go in with the mentality to win. We know that these last three points won’t give us our ticket to the next round; we need to ensure we win and gain three more points.”

Rayadas player, Rebeca Bernal, who was a vital piece of the squad that secured the 1-0 victory last match, reiterated the confidence they felt going into Saturday.

“We’re very motivated. We knew it was important to start the first game strong and that’s exactly what we did against an opponent like Jamaica who also played their specific style.”

Mexico was able to secure eleven shots on goal and maintained 59 percent of the possession against a former World Cup contender. St. Kitts & Nevis is currently 127th according to FIFA rankings and given Canada’s dominance over them, should be a guaranteed victory for the Aztecas.

“We’re now focused on our next match with a very different approach but we’re going to go in looking for those three points. [St. Kitts] might’ve entered the tournament with a very drastic scoreline but we can’t [underestimate them]. Our objective is clear: win and secure a spot in the next round,” Bernal stated.

Mexico is set to kick off against St. Kitts & Nevis on Saturday, February 1st at 12:00 PM PST and will be available to watch on Fox Sports 2 and TUDN.
