Rafael Márquez will be part of the new coaching staff of the Mexican national team with the arrival of Javier Aguirre. On Tuesday, it was announced that Jaime Lozano, who held the position for almost 13 months, was leaving right after the team was eliminated in the group stage of the Copa América.
It was reported that Rafa Márquez was the top choice of the FMF to join El Vasco Aguirre at El Tri, but the list of candidates was extensive. Renewing his contract with Barcelona B a few weeks ago made it seem unlikely that the former Blaugrana center-back would accept the invitation. However, according to Gibrán Araige of TUDN, Márquez has accepted the opportunity with the Mexican national team.
“Rafa Márquez has said yes. There is a verbal agreement between the Federation and the Kaiser. He liked the project leading up to 2030 and the chance to continue learning alongside El Vasco. The only thing left is to part ways with Barcelona,” Araige posted on X.
The key to convincing Rafael Márquez to accept being an assistant with Aguirre is that his contract with Mexico will automatically renew after the 2026 World Cup, positioning him to become the new head coach for the 2030 World Cup qualifiers, according to Gibrán Araige.
