Report: Gerardo Martino names 29-man squad for March friendlies against Chile, Paraguay

Confirming earlier reports by Univision’s Gibran Araige, the Federation of Mexican Football (FMF) released Gerardo Martino’s first convocados, a squad of 29 players, for Mexico’s March 2019 friendlies against Chile and Paraguay.

Among the players included in are Diego Lainez, Hector Moreno, Henry MartinHirving LozanoJuan Pablo VigonRaul JimenezJorge Sanchez, and Jose Juan Vazquez.

However, not all of El Tri‘s ‘stars’ are returning.  Javier ‘Chicharito’ Hernandez and Andres Guardado had been undecided on whether he would accept a call into this side but accepted a callup regardless. On the other hand, Carlos VelaHector Herrera, and Antonio Briseno are among the embajadores who were neither included or out of the picture altogether.

Herrera, FC Porto’s current club captain, had already chosen to stay out of the national team side in order to take his Portuguese citizenship examination as to be able to gain both Portuguese citizenship and an EU passport.

El Tri will convene for games against Chile in San Diego on Friday, March 22 and against Paraguay in Santa Clara, California on Tuesday, March 26.
